ALCHEMY by Sage

ALCHEMY by Sage is a collaborative project by Ella Senbruns, Isabelle Cowan, Nadya Wilson, Maxx Bubb, Beetle Miyela, Yulia Skorina, Warwick Gow and Niamh Mcdonald hosted by Land Street Gallery in Toowong. These 8 artists responded to the title theme by working collaboratively in pairs. The pairings featured one jeweler/small object maker and one 2D artist.

“Alchemy is an archaic philosophy which was most prominent during the Italian Renaissance (15th - 16th centuries). The alchemist asks, “How may we transform our environment and ourselves to serve our higher goals?”. Transmuting base metals into gold is a metaphor commonly associated with this idea, where ‘gold’ can represent a material, spiritual or intellectual pursuit. This exhibition aims to foster collaborations between artists, and create a variety of works that are based on the spiritual, chemical, religious or historical implications of alchemy. Artists have been encouraged to respond in abstract ways to the changing of one thing to another, as well as engage with current cultural or political transformations.”
